About
Hi, I’m David — a writer, designer, and lifelong creator, born in Amsterdam in 1970.
Over the years, I’ve shaped a path that blends art, technology, story – with soul. My journey has taken me from the physics labs of Eindhoven to the design studios of London, and now to Haarlem, a charming town near the North Sea dunes, where I live with my wife Ailish and our son Yaron.
I grew up in Amsterdam and The Hague. In my twenties and thirties, I wandered through different disciplines: science, psychology, art, and eventually design and storytelling. For over two decades, I’ve worked in visual communication—across web, print, animation, branding, and user experience—both independently and with leading agencies and clients in Amsterdam and London.
But I’ve always been drawn to the deeper stories behind things. That’s led me to write—first short stories, then a memoir about identity and adoption (Phantom Parents), and now a second book exploring life with Parkinson’s, fatherhood, and the strange beauty that comes with facing change.
In everything I do, I try to bring together the rational, the poetic, and the playful. I see creativity as a form of embodied thinking, and I’m currently developing a project called The Standing Studio, an immersive, adaptive workspace designed to help people—especially those with Parkinson’s—work, move, and create with greater ease.
Whether it’s through writing, visuals, design, or dialogue, my work revolves around connection, clarity, and meaning.
I believe stories can heal, design can liberate, and slowing down might just be a superpower.

What others say about me

In the very modesty and honesty of his drawing and writing Enker brings a real conviction to get across this extraordinary, life-changing, life-renewing event, to us and to himself.
(from Paul’s 2008 review of In Transition, my 7/7 London bombings experience book)

David is a great artist/designer. He has some awesome illustration-skills. He made illustrations and animations for a game at IJsfontein which I had to program. He’s got a very kind spirit and is quick and responsive. I highly recommend him.

David worked to tight (possibly crazy) deadlines and deliver what we needed perfectly to brief. Would use him again, definitely.

We got to know David as a sympathetic, empathetic colleague when he worked with us on websites, newsletters, DTP work and on beautiful visuals and illustrations.
